Asbestos Removal in Maplewood

Maplewood projects like a garage teardown, a new kitchen floor or a ceiling redo can stall over one unknown material. We line up the testing, take out anything the lab confirms and handle the state notice, which keeps the rest of your crew on schedule.

Roughly half of Maplewood’s housing was built before 1980, and 1979 is the median year built.

Asbestos removal services

Testing first

Samples come first on every job. The asbestos testing page explains what an inspection covers and when the rules call for one.

Textured ceilings

Before a light fixture moves, get the ceiling texture sampled. If it’s positive, popcorn ceiling removal shows how we take it down.

Kitchen and basement floors

Kitchen and basement floors can hide two or three layers. Vinyl tile, adhesive and sheet goods are each sampled, and positive layers come up under floor tile and mastic removal.

Attic fill

Adding insulation over old fill can stir it up. Check first for gravel-like granules, a sign of possible vermiculite, and read vermiculite attic insulation removal before the installer arrives.

Old siding

Gray cement shingles that have to come off for new siding or an addition fall under asbestos siding removal.

Maplewood housing

Maplewood’s homes are spread across the decades. The 1950s and the 1980s each account for about 16 percent of today’s homes, and the 1970s add close to 15 percent. Close to 1 in 10 homes dates from before 1950.

Different ages, different finishes

A house from the 1950s and one from the 1980s may have quite different ceilings, floors and walls. Sampling the rooms you will change is how you learn what each one has.

Apartments and condos

About 1 in 4 Maplewood homes are in apartment or condo buildings of five or more units. Since those buildings are bigger than houses of four units or less, MPCA’s renovation and demolition notice covers them, filed ten working days ahead of regulated asbestos work.

Demolition permits in Maplewood

Maplewood requires a demolition permit to remove a main building, a garage or an in-ground pool. Among the steps on the city’s demolition page is scheduling a pre-demolition inspection with Ramsey County, and the page says an asbestos survey may be required.

Order of work

Set the demolition date only after the survey and any removal are planned. Minnesota expects asbestos to be gone from a building at least two days before it is torn down.

Frequently asked questions

Does a remodel need asbestos testing?

There is no blanket Minnesota requirement for homeowners to test before a remodel. A contractor with employees working where asbestos may be present needs a survey before starting, though, and only a lab result tells you what your own materials contain.

Who can remove asbestos in my home?

The state carves out room for just one do-it-yourselfer, an owner doing the work in the one-family home where they live. That person needs neither an asbestos license nor a permit fee, and MDH still strongly advises bringing in a licensed contractor. Landlords, and every duplex and apartment building, need an MDH-licensed asbestos contractor once the job passes the state limits.

How soon can removal start?

It starts with the lab results. If they show regulated work, a licensed contractor files notice with MDH, and removal can begin once at least five calendar days have passed.

Can asbestos go out with the trash?

No. Every load travels with a manifest to a landfill that takes asbestos, and before the trip the material stays wet inside labeled containers that can’t leak.

Our Oakdale page covers the same services for that city. The home page covers the rest.
