Vinyl floor tile, the black mastic that holds it down and older sheet flooring can each contain asbestos. We sample every layer, then remove what tests positive, lifting tiles whole wherever they release and bagging them as we go. You end up with a clean subfloor for the new floor.

Our floor crews work in Woodbury, Maplewood and Oakdale. July 1, 2021 ended the flooring exemption for houses and for buildings with up to four units, and the state asbestos work rules have covered those floors ever since.

Floors we remove

Vinyl tile

Sanding or grinding turns intact tile into regulated asbestos, so we work each tile up by hand so it comes away in one piece, since a cracked tile can release fibers.

Black mastic

Black mastic gets a sample of its own, since each layer is tested separately.

Sheet flooring

Paper-backed linoleum needs the most care of any floor here, because MPCA considers that backing friable in most cases. It gets wetted before the first cut and stays wet until the final strip is in a bag.

Covering it instead

If the old floor is intact, MDH allows for laying the new floor right over it. Tile that is cracked, broken or powdery can release fibers and should come out with a licensed crew.

Getting a room ready

Bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and basements can each hide more than one layer of flooring.

Bathrooms and laundry rooms

A toilet or a washer has to be moved out first so the whole floor can come up.

Basements

Downstairs, the tile sits on the concrete slab. Clear storage off the floor and leave a path to an outside door for the sealed bags.
