Sampling for one project
Samples come only from what your work will disturb. A kitchen update might mean the floor layers, the ceiling and one wall. If the plan grows into the next room, that room is added.

Before a contractor sands a ceiling, pulls up a floor or cuts into a wall, it helps to know what those materials are made of. We arrange for an MDH-certified inspector to sample them and send the samples to an accredited lab. The written results show which materials are clear and which ones call for licensed removal.
Whether you own the home or manage it, you can book testing in Woodbury, Maplewood or Oakdale before a remodel, a new floor or a teardown.

A house coming down needs more than spot samples. Before any structure is demolished, MPCA expects an MDH-certified asbestos inspector to walk all of it, inside and out, not just the room a remodel would have opened.
The lab that reads your samples holds NVLAP accreditation or AIHA accreditation for bulk asbestos. Each material is reported on its own line, and Minnesota calls anything with more than 1 percent asbestos asbestos-containing.
Is the house newer than October 1988? Then MDH does not insist on an inspection, provided the architect or contractor writes a letter saying asbestos was kept out of the building.
A blanket testing rule for homeowners doesn’t exist in Minnesota. Separate rules still put testing first in several situations, and the main ones follow.
A company sending employees to demolish, remodel or restore in spaces that might contain asbestos has to get a qualified person’s survey beforehand and keep written proof of it.
A shop, an office or a public building is a different case from a home. Age doesn’t matter there, and an asbestos inspection has to happen before any renovation or demolition.
Past the state limits, the material may be disturbed only by an MDH-licensed asbestos contractor. The plumber, the electrician and the remodeler in your house are bound by that too.
