Vermiculite Attic Insulation Removal in Woodbury

Typical cost in Woodbury

  • Attic vermiculite or loose-fill, about 800 to 1,500 sq ft of attic$7,500 – $19,000+

Lift the attic hatch and you may see loose, light granules of light brown, gray or gold lying between the joists. That may be vermiculite. MDH’s guidance is to leave it alone while it stays undisturbed and to have a licensed contractor remove it. An insulation upgrade, air sealing or new wiring disturbs it, and that’s when we take it out.

Attic insulation work

Is it vermiculite?

Vermiculite pours loose and feels light and granular, unlike a batt or a blanket of insulation. Zonolite is a common brand, according to MDH. Until it’s identified, keep storage boxes and foot traffic out of the attic.

Leaving it alone

If nothing will disturb the attic, MDH’s advice is to leave vermiculite where it is. A ceiling repair below, a new light fixture or extra insulation changes that.

Removal

Nothing moves until the hatch is sealed and the rooms below are protected. Then the vermiculite goes into sealed, labeled bags while negative air holds the attic contained, and the plastic stays up until air samples are done.

Licensed work and paperwork

When friable material in a home can’t be measured by length or area, it counts as regulated work for a licensed contractor at more than 1 cubic foot. As MDH suggests, ask that contractor for the MDH permit, the waste manifest, the lab report from air sampling and their Minnesota license, and file them with your house records.

What comes next

Once the old fill is gone and the joists are bare, your insulation contractor can air-seal the ceiling and add new insulation with nothing in the way. If anyone will cut into the ceiling texture below, it may need a sample of its own.
