Asbestos Siding Removal in Woodbury

Typical cost in Woodbury

  • Siding on one wall, garage or shed, about 200 to 400 sq ft$2,400 – $6,000+
  • Siding on a one-story house, about 1,200 to 1,800 sq ft of wall$9,500 – $24,000+
  • Siding on a two-story house, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of wall$15,000 – $38,000+

On MDH’s page about asbestos in the home, siding appears next to roofing, and MDH advises leaving both alone while they are in good condition. If an addition, new windows or new siding means the old shingles have to go, we wet them down, take each one off whole and wrap them before they leave the wall.

The state asbestos rules don’t stop at the front door. On July 1, 2021, siding on homes with up to four units stopped being exempt from them. If you live in Woodbury, Maplewood or Oakdale and the old siding has to come off, we can take it down.

Siding work

Whole-house removal

Plastic goes down along the foundation and over plantings, shingles come off by hand, and every piece is wrapped and sealed before it is carried away.

One wall or a garage

An addition or a new window may only touch part of the house. We take off the rows in the way and leave the rest.

Repair instead of removal

Shingles with some damage can be repaired with care instead, and where local codes allow, MDH notes, siding can sometimes be covered over.

Roofing

Asbestos roofing gets the same careful handling. MDH adds that asbestos use in roofing and siding dropped quickly after the early 1980s.

Siding on a teardown

Taking the whole house down? Its asbestos, siding included, must be removed first, no later than two days before demolition, because Minnesota applies that rule to homes as well as other buildings. Leave some in the part being razed and the entire debris load must be treated as asbestos waste.

MPCA notice for houses

MPCA requires a ten-working-day notice before a regulated building is demolished, but its rule excludes houses of four units or less, so a homeowner razing a single house is usually outside it. The notice applies again for a house converted from a regulated use, for several houses demolished by one owner, and for urban renewal, highway or commercial development work.
